Russian goalball team recovering from the Paralympic shock
Russian women’s goalball team left Pajulahti as winners after last year’s tournament. Now they are back and it wouldn’t be a surprise if they claimed the title again. They started the tournament with a comfortable 9-4 win over Israel.
- I’m satisfied with the result but not at all satisfied with the way we played, said Russian head coach Ilkam Nabiev.
Russian goalball team, as well as all Russian para athletes, had a tough year as they were banned from the Rio Paralympic Games due to the serious doping ambiguities. Russian women’s goalball team would have been one of the favourites to win gold medals in Rio.
- We were preparing for the Paralympic Games and getting ready to play in the final. The decision was all politics and of course we were shocked. But now we need to move forward, Nabiev told.
The IPC ban still holds on but the Russian team is getting ready for the European Championships played in Pajulahti on 15-23 of September.
