Pajulahti Games 2017: The hosts won a thriller for a third place in sitting volleyball

Finnish women’s sitting volleyball team ended their home tournament Pajulahti Games with a real thriller. Finland won Russian second team in five sets 3–2 (15–25, 25–19, 25–20, 23–25, 15–13) and finished third in the tournament after Russian first team and the Netherlands.

– We were completely asleep in the first set. Opponent smashed hard and our player just sit there and looked each other asking who should have took that. We managed to get back in the game, though, and the fifth sets are quite a lottery to be honest. I think that the braver team won and this time it was us, said Timo Väre, the head coach of Finnish team.

There were no medal matches in the tournament, just round robin with all six teams playing once against each other. Still, the two best teams, Russia I and the Netherlands, met in the last match of the tournament. Finnish coach Väre had said a day earlier, after Finland managed to challenge the Russian first team quite well, that Russia still had room for improvement if they just would need to do that. It seems that they did that against the Netherlands as the match were totally one-sided: 3–0 (25–12, 25–14, 25–12).

Hungary finished fourth in the tournament before Russia II and Great Britain.
