2016: Sweden are back on top in men’s goalball

Sweden faced a bit of a downfall in men’s goalball few years back after failing to qualify for the 2014 World Championship in Espoo, Finland. Now they are back on top with a ticket to Rio in pocket. Sweden also managed to make it to the gold match of the Pajulahti Games on Sunday.

Sweden finished second in the group stage behind mighty Lithuania. In the semifinal Sweden were trailing 3–6 against Germany on halftime but scored five goals in the second period climbing to a 8–6 victory. On Sunday they meet Lithuania in the final. In the group stage match Lithuania beat Sweden 15–9.

Women’s gold match in Pajulahti is a rematch of the 2014 World Championship final as Russia meets United States, who have won all their matches so far. In the World Championship final two years ago USA beat Russia 3–0 and in the Pajulahti Games group stage match 2–1.
